Separation
A circular saw fractures
The grainy silence;
A biplane loops and re-loops
The widening memories
Of the valley.
We push you on the swing,
First mummy, then daddy,
Forwards, backwards,
Each of us claiming custody
For a full half-second.
Your Christmas will be presents,
And TV laughter,
And ‘tell me again, mummy’.
Mine will be
The half-empty bottle,
And an unmeant card.
