Beach Snaps 1955-1995
1
Crushed and comforted,
a small seabird between two great grey rocks,
the boy sits between the two women.
A convention of their time
to regard the camera,
it catches smiles that are fading,
unsure of the moment of exposure.
The boy’s face:
white blown cheeks
black knowing eyes
and wriggling grin.

Blue mist radiates away the edge of the world.
We twist and hop between weed green sandhills
and glistening, gritty wormcasts.
These are parasites feeding on the flank of
a stranded seamonster whose scales
are pools of shining seawater
patterned by the wind.
(The beast must breathe shallow
until it is reclaimed by the sea.)
Your face is set and still
As you look at the light
At the edges of the world.
