On the Beach
The running sea, the rising wave, trips
stumbles, peaks - thin as a blade - tumbles
shatters - stun grenade, white fountain - scatters
slowly spreads in swill of soft domestic suds
sinks
draws back, hissing (the cold wind knifes me)
gathers itself like - how clearly I see her! -
a Victorian maid gathering her grey skirt, her white underskirts,
runs in - maid gone, water again, the rising wave -
in endless repetition.
Image of optimism, image of persistence, image of futility?
None of these.
For it has no memory, the sea.
breaking, again and again, on the beach, my heart following
every movement.
