In Praise of Straggling
'We offer tales...about some of her story 's
more remarkable stragglers, groundbreaking gals
who got lost upon the way...'

It is not necessary to be lost if you are a straggler.
It is not necessary to straggle to get lost; there are
many more effective ways of losing yourself - and others.
Straggling is always worth it at the time:
searching likely hedgerows for the first violet of spring;
taking time out to happen upon a drift of cowslips
on a canal bank - or a grass snake basking in the sun.
All very WH Davies, I know. But time is a wonderful place
for straggling in and let seconds, hours, days, and, even, a lifetime
pass.
The only disadvantage that I know is if you feel
you should be travelling with a group
yet have no choice but to straggle
and, after, have to run your hardest to catch up.
' Absent without leave', as my dictionary puts it,
' but not long enough to be counted a deserter'.
