Madonna with a Wooden Spoon
The door was opened by a little girl
a baby slowly slipping off her hip,
about ten, give or take a year.
I ducked and weaved my way
past several prams, and nappies
hung like bunting in the hall.
Girdled with children,
she lit the steamy kitchen
with her smile.
A child slid off her father’s lap
to pat my nurses’ bag
and gently feel its swollen sides.
And so we talked about the birth,
when she was due, a home birth as before,
and he would be there as he always was:
A cockney working man
wed to a dark haired maiden
from the hills of Spain,
the secret of their warm contentedness,
they can’t converse,
but that has never mattered.
