Drinking-up Time
Thin trill of bell, quick bright jet which sounds
Again, sharp auditory chill in smoke
And heated cachinnation of the bar.
The clock's black sleight of hands again astounds —
Last Orders called; supplied. Damp towels cloak
Pump-handles, like caged parrots, for the dark.
On the table-top geometry of rings
Is wiped away. We grip the last half inch
With shifty grins. The end has now begun.
There's no reprieve. The yawning doorway brings
Rumours of the night; we blink and flinch,
Drinking up time, as we have always done.
