From the Lost Property List
Not paper dolls to call their own,
‘the dolls that other fellas couldn’t steal’,
no, blow-up ones, blubbers for loners
called early by mobile phones
who left seven dollies deflating.
In the white hotel morning, prone
and cast down on cold carpets
they didn’t call up ardour.
Even with no word of parting
wept no tears of misery.
Seven men walked out still lonely,
melted into pin figures in airport,
city, station, their dolldreams’
breath turned to cold air,
eyes open shiny with blank stares.
Silence shrouds all abandoned ones
condemned to lost property’s black bags,
cast-offs of lives that seem to know
nothing best or something best not said.
Dreams fade, gather dust under beds.
