Poem on Your Fortieth Birthday
for Martyn
August, we watched storm-clouds skirt Clontarf
petrels congregating on rock and driftwood,
rain herringboned horizon.
Slinging against the deco-shelter’s roof. Just us
and shifting crow-feet.
Twin chimneys obliterated,
not drops but rods, slashing seaward,
bladderwrack oily waves. Still, like an eclipse
gulling cormorants from calling.
Then ore licked shallows,
chimneys again, joy frolicking the gut.
Midas stroked our faces ... chrome sheeted the bay ...
galvanised North-Bull.
Now November, poplar spare,
determined leaves are Christmas-
baubles on discarded firs.
Listen, as that August downfall patters out,
as ochre’s slippery kisses bring us there again.
