In the Pick-Up
Driving the narrow greenbanked road towards
his heifers' summer grazing in the field
left to him by Wil's auntie twenty years
ago, he says the river has no fish.
He remembers bucketsful he took
below the Gwyddgrug bridge when he was young.
I remember the sewin caught by hand
lower down the same small river by Chris
on a hobble at our house remembering
the trick he learnt in childhood. We drive
along another greenbanked road towards
the other heifers' field and talk about
a robin in a bedroom, bats and rats
and snakes in zoos and phobias and hay.
In the same pick-up yesterday we
wondered if eighty years is a long time
or a short. We pass purple vetch reaching
above the uncut hedge and wild strawberries
red on the shaven hedgebank but I write
this remembering the river with no fish.
