Totem Pole Glory
I handle everyday objects
with adoration
a glass
crystalline transparency
a plate
chip on the rim
an apple
audacious form
screaming green
I praise their familiarity
and dream…
Of building a tower
that strikes moonward
with fork foundations
and old welly boots
chunks of cork
star scored screws
stools stones and broken bones
beans and birds’ feathers
smashed mirrors
half mauled fruit
pomegranate juice seeping
from fissures
dripping through structure
like rubies
sheep wool and stockings
a strategy of equilibrium
harmony and rhyme
standing the test of time.
I dream of towers and totem poles
and build words on a page.
