Gardening Tip
He used it as a good excuse to get
outside and say hello to people.
He’d be mowing in July and raking
leaves up in November; then slug-pelleting,
hinge-oiling, fixing trellises, dead-heading
in between times. All the rows of roses
that he budded from the wild demanded
prickly hours of tying, nipping, knowing
what to do. Kids called to him and drivers waved.
The whole lane altered when he wasn’t there.
In snow, he picked along the drive, but never
swept a flake until he knew the worst was past.
When packed-flat ice unfroze from paths and yard
he skittered shovelfuls across where lawn should be:
Don’t tackle things too soon. Walk on your snow.
