Bopping In The Dark
Did she give him her address?
Headlights are the only certainty.
Large and faithful in the night behind,
she knows them now; they’re watching her.
Few people on the road this late…
What colour is the car, what make?
What colour are the driver’s eyes?
She saw his hair but not his eyes.
Was the name really David? Perhaps
she had imagined it? And David what?
She doesn’t know how fast to drive.
At times the pale pursuing moons
grow bright as suns. Is it a sign?
Does he want her to stop? She indicates,
pulls in. and winds the window down.
A figure walks briskly to the car.
Can she have seen this face before?
‘You were flashing?’ He shakes his head.
‘Oh dear, it’s hard to tell; I’m sorry,
‘Doesn’t matter. Are you ready, shall we go?’
On the road again, the country road…
An hour and a half is a very long time,
too long to be followed. It must be a dream;
it isn’t happening. Watch the tarmac.
Concentrate. Look out for motorway signs.
No, not a dream, yet does he exist?
She’s going home from a party, that’s all,
and listening to the BBC World Service…
But those resolute discs of light
seem real…they bop in the darkness.
Two orbs of warmth beam her shoulders,
gently probe her spine. A sweet heat
moves upon her body, brushing nipples,
stroking thighs. She makes the motorway,
at last; heads for home and her bed.
