The Dream Of The Suburbs
They never seem to run on time,
though somewhere, on a certain day,
one must be prepared to leave
exactly when it’s supposed to.
It won’t pause on the way,
other than to call at places
where everyone expects it,
nor will it suddenly stop
and stand silent for an hour or so
where it’s not meant to be.
People will set their watches
by its running, and those waiting
to board it or to meet someone
will not need to wonder
if they’ve missed it,
or has it been cancelled or delayed.
It will glide in as the clock
moves to the appropriate minute,
and glide out again as smoothly.
