Two Buildings (Near Clonakilty, County York)
On the water’s edge the mill is daughter
to persistence of time, and fists
of grass and weeds re-class the pitted stone
as loveless outcomes of neglect. Throughout,
the roof-less years of weathering stand proof
and dark and empty windows hold contempt.
The old house, that stands between the folding
hills and overhears the shrill cry of the
gulls
and overlooks the swans upon the strand
where estuary waters flow to test
the continuity of time at Ring,
preserves within the thickness and the curve
of walls an ancient peace of Ireland’s strain
and guards the placid nature of the place
since love has cared and strengthened and
repaired
the fabric that has made a scabbard of
the present that will bless a future time.
