Solar Eclipse, 12-45, Mljet, Dalmatia
Absolute stillness... the rachet-tick of tree-crickets
Suddenly winding down, the same bench-and-pine shadows
But the light lacking the glare and blanch of high noon,
I bob in the turbulent shallows of the Small Lake,
Blue turning grey, mellowing Aleppo, the whipped scud deepened
To the backlit whorls of sundown, the whole world
Printed by the molten bill-hook of a burning orb
To the darker tones of an underdeveloped photograph -
You can see why it might have seemed
The spring of the world had sprung open: the same moon
That blackened the sun, pulling silver-green flecks of minuscule fish
In the tidal channel, the god glinting in
The current like light silvering the popples, that once too had gilded
The moonless cypress grove whose Escher volumes seemed
afterwards
To peer down on the phosphor-blooms of the Milky Way.
