Standing on the Bridge
Tradition does not always rest in the stars
nor in the depths of the darkened sea
more likely in April bird song
or the hum of bees round flowers
hidden treasure and the gift of wisdom
are hardly worth the candle
when it comes to sirens and the roar of traffic
a book lies on the lawn unopened
clouds move between it and the sun
today is always special
before it dies as yesterday
the sound of voices clink of teacups
the chain-saw comes tomorrow
the ignorant tree still stands
change for ever turns the wheel
the new becomes the old the old the new
those standing on the bridge
appear to move upstream.
