She in her bouncing chair
stretched out
like a trainee voyager
on the deck of the QE 3
Mozart’s birthday
in front of her on TV
she who had thumped
to Wagner in the womb
such a mighty smith
we had switched it off
she who had turned
so slowly to Chopin
like a spacegirl
in her liquid suit
now joining Mozart
and at the Lachrymosa
her whole face crumpled
the way that babies do
in such sympathetic sadness
weeping inconsolably
until he stopped
