Spelling It Out
The hook was baited, winter’s grip freshly broken
and the river trembled with exhilarating sounds.
I paid attention to his instructions;
dip the tip,
let the fish swim.
It seemed at the time, we discovered together
how to clean the feet of cows or sheep
and, by persuasion,
milk from a teat,
why a dog belongs to only one man.
Not to stand behind a horse with a sudden voice,
but run a hand across her flanks,
coax the harness,
keep a continuous stream of talk.
Each stride of mine a copy that fell into place
as we raced
in the search for understanding.
He rarely rebuked me,
a look was enough
to quell the rebellion.
I am teaching my children in what Mother says
was your very manner.
