Michael Cunningham
Giving up early in the afternoon
Yesterday a little man in a big coat
wanted to give me a parking ticket
but I’d left the car at home
so he had to let me off with a warning.
Today I am sat in an easy chair
too lazy to lace up my Asics,
watching a November sun give up
early in the afternoon. Friends
are welcome but not expected.
I won’t sign up to be bullied
about home improvements,
holidays in the sun and
up to the minute three piece suites.
But I want to be there for someone like
the nurse in the Royal who called me
Mike, or the radiant smile in X-ray.
I am what I am, do what I do.
No worries if it isn’t poetry.
