Pauline Matarasso
Wayside Calvary
The body hangs eternally
at the parting of ways
and at every fork
the arms point impartially
right and left
sometimes a narrow roof pretends
to keep the rain off
but nothing
can keep the driving snow
out of the open eyes
that watch for one
coming along the road
and reading the signs
of the times
according to which
left is right and right
is wrong or maybe
vice versa
and the hands themselves
are nailed into position
and are not indicating
the scenic route
let alone the most direct
but the one that is safe
as safe as death
