scissors cut rock by Geoff Sawers
(Flarestack, 41 Buckley’s Green Alvechurch, Birmingham B48 7NG, [email protected], £3, ISBN 1900397781, A5, 44pp, stapled)
Isn’t afraid to show off a sense of humour. eg in "Park Street Poets chant down Babylon", "I used to be a post-modernist. Now I’m a post-man./ Well, it pays the rent. And I deliver Park Street...//...// Then they all move on, maybe somewhere better,/ but once they’re gone I still deliver/ wads of rejection letters." although that "maybe somewhere better but once they’re gone" is lazy. In "Swansea Bay, low tide" the scene-setting "Golden pink in the dim quarter light/ the setting sun set spreads a rosy rash on the shoulders of Neath..." seems at odds with the ending "...my singing/ is lost without an echo// not yet// even the darkness breathes your name.". The intention is admirable, the execution needs an acuter attention to detail.
