BEST MK ARTIST
STEVE GROOM
He’s a ‘friend to the Kettle’, of course, but that doesn’t stop us loving everything he does. Quirky, funny, clever and poignant in equal measure, and universally acclaimed for it he is too.
Runners Up : Keri Edmonds / James Türl
BEST MK ARTS VENUE
MILTON KEYNES GALLERY
Still consistently bringing big names to the city, providing us with a range of cultcha and genrae, plus also confusing passers-by by being pink for a large section of 2004. Nice one.
Runners Up : MADCAP / Stantonbury Campus
BEST MK BAND
THE JIMI VOLCANO QUINTET
Admittedly we didn’t see anywhere near as many bands as we’d have liked in 2004, but the J-Vo performances at Togfest and Waterside were as good as ever – this is the first time they’ve won this award!
Runners Up : Mikaw Barish / Sebastian Windsor (ahem)
BEST MK DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT
THE BLACKSMITH’S ARMS, DOWNS BARN
Fast became our new local in 04, and despite an occasional bad rep, seems friendly and amenable. Well worth a visit on Karaoke nights, we may well be there crooning! J
Runners Up : Ship Ashore, Willen / The George, Stony
BEST MK ESTATE
WILLEN
A hotly contested one, this – Willen won out in the end for its good pub, its mellow scenery, its mysterious history, and a whole old/new architectural bent. Cripes!
Runners Up : Conniburrow / Greenleys
BEST MK FESTIVAL
FOLK ON THE GREEN
Stopping the Waterside winning for the fourth year in a row, in 04 FOTG had everything: bands, stalls, beers, old friends, and most importantly of all : the weather!
Runners Up : Togfest / The German Market at Xmas
BEST MK MUSIC VENUE
BAR CENTRAL (R.I.P.)
A tribute not just to seeing bands there in 2004, but for all the bands we’ve seen there over the years. Will be sadly missed by us all (see this issue and last for tributes).
Runners Up : Blacksmiths Arms / The MK Bowl
BEST MK PLAY
“THE DEATH OF EPSILON INDI B” by Selena Kyle
Part of the Paperfish showcase in February 04, this clever piece about a dying star was well-received by all.
Runners Up : “Top Girls” / “Juki & The Giant”
BEST MK POETRY COLLECTION
“DELICATE ELEPHANT” by Darren Gray
For the first time (to our knowledge) a local poet and friend of the Kettle produced a glossy, full-length, ISBN-and-buyable-on-Amazon poetry collection. And it was a good one, too!
BEST MK THEATRE COMPANY
PEPPER’S GHOST THEATRE COMPANY
For their debut production of “Top Girls” at MADCAP in the Autumn – good to see local theatre can still surprise and engage...
Runners Up : Ludamus / Paperfish
SPECIAL MONKEY KETTLE POETRY AWARD
PAUL GRANT
Local boy Paul has sent me literally hundreds of poems over the last couple of years, and I could publish almost all of them if I had space! Such fecundity wins him this years’ special poetry award!
Runners Up : Anthony Kane Evans / Darren Gray
