Family, friends and future plans vanished
with darkness burrowing into your brain,
leaving a hole dreams could no longer fill.
Desolation captured your heart, destroying.
Disappearing anonymous in the crowd.
Bedraggled, trodden down and endless days
sleeping in doorways, a bottle to kiss
away the night shadows lurking on walls.
Carrying ragged carrier bags filled with
tattered newspapers, other people’s lives,
and a dog-eared photo or two but you
don’t recollect who, where or why, or care.
No distinguishing features, cold, naked...Dead
on a sterile mortuary bed, John Doe.
