Now
Looking up into blue sky, I realise I don’t
know the name of the bird with a great
wing span which is circling high above me
on the updrafts of air, self confident, solemn
as a prayer. The body is lit by a narrow stripe of sun;
the jagged wing tips seem darker. Circles
gradually widen and move away.
The movement seems like a memory of something
I have forgotten. I can only see half the arc
as the bird glides behind a tree canopy. It comes around
again, but even further off now. My eyes are hurting and
I begin to realise the sight is almost lost and I think
it might be better for me to turn away
first and to look back again at the wider blue
this moment is disappearing into.
