In the last days, the only place you could be
sure of lunch was the Imperial Hotel
Harp was news from elsewhere gathering
in scales across the ornamental lake,
the small pond and the swimming pool.
Heart was hers gazing with all the patience
of fishermen and their silence downwards
past the sharpening tongues of water
and in through Casement which was green glass
opening in the water's deeper wall,
valve into some older river's road.
Carp was a silent order, mysterious domain,
a golden age stored in a dark barn,
water expanding in a previous summer's heat.
Paper was a small red salmon curling
in her palm, the open offer of a feast,
a future known, fish always on Fridays.
