Church Supper
I love a church supper
comforting as white cake --
the hamburg casseroles,
white styrofoam cups,
unsurprising urn coffee,
metal chairs 300 alike,
long folding tables
with white paper cloths.
A church supper,
in the parish hall
with crayon pictures of Jesus
and tissue carnations.
We all eat green jello,
drink kool-aid,
wear crepe-soled shoes,
nothing with heels.
Wholesome and homey
nothing alarming, no one
stands up to sing a torch song,
soul-kisses their girlfriend,
brings escargot or flaming cherries.
A church supper, it is a repetition
of a calming nursery rhyme
it is white nurse’s shoes,
tapioca pudding,
it is baby lotion,
your hair brushed 100 times,
a story, and being tucked in to bed.
