A Girl Calling
(Reproduced with permission - this poem may not be reproduced without permission from David Higham Associates.)
Once upon a time
When the snow was falling
A girl went calling, calling
From tree to tree:
“My dove,
Where can he be?
I have lost my soft-winged dove
With eyes of jet
And coral feet,
I have lost my love,
My pet,
My sweet.
Every day
He brought me a gold nut
From the filbert-tree
Of the fairy king,
Every day
Inside the nut was shut
A present for me,
A toy, a ring,
A something, a nothing, an anything.
It kept me glad all day.
But now the ice-cold
Wizard
Who lives in the blizzard
Has driven my dove away,
Driven my dove away.
There will be no gold
Nut
With a secret shut
Inside its shell
Till the snow has lifted its spell,
And my sweet
With the eyes of jet,
My pet
With the coral feet,
My love
With the soft white wing,
My dove
Flies back in the spring.”
So through the falling
Snow, the girl went calling,
Calling... calling...
From tree to tree:
“My love,
My love,
My dove,
Where can he be ?”
