At dusk the dead go shopping.
I see them at closing
standing in the bus queue in ones and twos
holding their bags and bright parcels
wearing the small saintly smiles
of those who have chosen well
in the fading lights from night buses
you catch the curve of a nose
the line of a cheek
the faint map of a face
the way the head comes clean
from the neck like a flower
I see someone who looks like
not looks, it is
and there and there and
they are there
it is everyone I love
come back to shop
looking tired but pleased
with their bargains
I don’t approach them of course. Politely
I keep my place in the line of the queue
if they wanted to speak
they would speak.
