Is there waiting in eternity?
What measures separation
of non-beginning from a never-ending?
Tangible events unfolded slow
as cud-chew of unfocussed beasts
surrounding him. His first experience
of sleep was marred by sudden
stamp and kick of cattle,
rough awakening
to a notion of the unexpected.
Led and tethered by the twine of time
we jostle up against our stalls,
face one way towards what happens next,
responding heavy-footed
to murmurs of the herdsman
who has stayed behind,
patient with the rhythm of the stable
until the end of winter when the other
one retreads his steps
to fetch us out into an upland sunlight.
