Haibun: Pedalling home
It’s getting dark when I set off for home. The ‘green man’ beams as I jump the lights and drift across Trafalgar Square, past the sign for ‘Puppet of the Penis’, and down Whitehall. Behind me the ‘red man’ holds back the pedestrians as a wave of motors snarl into the square, inundating me in their stink and roar. There’s a jam at Parliament Square and I squeeze past bubbling exhausts and the run the lights beneath the far-off gaze of Churchill. From Lambeth Bridge the traffic hurtles down the patched-up red route to Vauxhall. It is dark by the time I reach the one-way system. Rain begins to fall, cleaning the air, brake lights stretch out on along the crimson road. Caught in white lights, bathed in red, I spin uphill to Clapham
North and on to home.
every nook and cranny,
each puddle and fold of the road
dissolving halos
