Pump
Up and down the river wall -
Tamarisk, willow and broom -
Keep on walking till you fall,
Smiling Good afternoon.
A change of mind as daylight turns
And you’re still here, alone;
The bitter taste of crisp green ferns,
A retching, dry walk home.
Your sheepishness as you display
The spare pills and the note;
The doctor’s sigh, your Dad’s dismay,
A tube shoved down your throat.
