Loot
It was a long time
before I met my father
as he lived in another
country called War
which was too far away
for him to travel home
though parcels sometimes came
as evidence of him:
a Mussolini hat
black with golden tassels;
some greyish chocolate
that had melted and reset;
a model cast-iron bath
with legs, enamelled white,
and ‘Dante Martiri e Figli’
printed along one side;
a bale of blue brocaded
silk for party dresses;
a doll sent with a message
‘Call her Anna Maria’.
And postcards I still have,
that chart an army's progress
from Catania to Cortina
in shades of grey and sepia,
and on the back of each
‘Much love from Daddy’ and
three stiff kisses
in a military hand.
