If you forget where you are, drive around
until you see the water tower: It names the town
in block letters as tall as the cornstalks.
Stroll into a coffee shop and slide into a seat
at the counter. Without a moment’s consideration,
the regulars eye you for a stranger,
so ask them what town this is
as the waitress pours your coffee. Stay around
if it rains, order peach pie.
Ask a child what town you’re in
so she thrills with the answer
she needs to know.
Avoid truck stops, county fairs. Even the park
probably hosts vacationers, whole families shaking
their legs between destinations. You want
the seventeen-year-old mechanic, the donut shop clerk,
someone who can rightfully say where is here,
here is where you are.
