Faces
There are lots of different faces;
each person has several;
but some people wear
the same face for years
and naturally it wears out,
gets dirty, splits at the seams,
stretches like their gloves
worn during a long journey.
They are thrifty, uncomplicated people;
they never change their face
nor even have it cleaned. They say
that it's good enough for everyday, and who
can convince them of the contrary?
Since they have several faces,
what do they do with the other ones?
Perhaps they're keeping them in mothballs
for their children to inherit;
and sometimes their dogs wear them.
Why bother to change? they say;
after all, a face is just a face.
