you used to eat in the lunch-room
instead of breakfast
months seasoned with mayonnaise
and chilli sauce
so that
you avoid
their taste.
Their future was always full of sausages
the lame old chambermaid
every morning
was carrying her lyric thriller
and the proprietor was talking
about the Parthenon
the air-pollution
and impressionism
Behind gothic porticos the time
belonging to the law of Say
and of Malthus
was creeping everywhere like a snake
smell of chlorophyll
nearly breaking
your nerves.
Green tiny frogs made of clay
were swimming inside your blood
until they entered
through the hair-like capillary
vessels of your brain
polluting your dreams
by time and by rotten chlorophyll.
