they deafened the wind
their whole way from the Arctic -
and still they cry
What does ‘they’ mean in this context? If you feel more or less certain of the answer, I believe it shows that a ‘season word’ may be present in a haiku by implication only. If you are not sure what ‘they’ means here, you may like to look at the end of this issue of the Journal where the ‘missing season word’ is revealed.
