Cows possess a grace that brings to mind
geometries of cloisters,
while their looks can be full of science,
recondite as accounts of photons
cruising parsecs in torrential stars.
The look of a cow seems to me
a thing I might
aspire to learn, as also
the love cows grow by,
the world grows by,
a thing that emboldens
a tree; take a beech I pass
at Lumford, one
so girthed of itself
and of what counts of us all
and grown so high
as to outreach
a beech’s reasonable
claims upon the sky,
the birds, the planets,
herds of intervals, well
all our algebraic heart and light.
Colin Sutherill’s first collection, Einstein’s Bumblebee, is just out from Blackwater Press. He is a member of the Association of British Science Writers.
