Small Fires
Wednesday morning and the walk down
through the garden to the water’s edge.
This could become a regular occurrence.
The signs are all there.
The little white specks on the tongue
that say ‘ulcer’, a discovered tenderness
of the flesh on the inside of the mouth,
legs both working, taking the weight,
arms in order, not so stiff, so sore.
The day some way off, like table-silver
sunk in a clear, shallow river.
