Huge mushrooms are a tender lesson,
a fixed rose a glass, or later a lamp.
A complete dining-room in wood and leather,
womb of the forest,
seems to call for the sun,
which today beats at the windows
whose long curtains calmly filter it.
Such an art of escape, so close to the disputed border,
both elegant (French) and romantic (German) -
but was it not rather a refusal of such history?
Its buildings, spread or wedged haphazardly
amongst neo-classical architecture
still so sure of itself,
are they exotic, or indigenous?
Experiments more and more ornate
met their limit in the Great War.
After that, severity.
Butterflies and dragonflies take off
today in the mirror of your eye,
in saleroom prices,
in imaginary gardens.
