The cross on the Chevin
1. For the man who played Jesus
She has cried all morning
type-cast herself in the role
long-drawn wail for Good Friday
all the more haunting
as there's no apparent cause
for she is fed dry wrapped warm
at thirteen months unfamiliar
with either lies or truth
in the church
we cannot stifle her noise
for the drama of Easter
So she's walked on the streets
through a balling rain
grievously as we two argue
who ought to have taken her
who would have liked to remain
where for how long quarrelling
over divisions of labour
our little girl passionate
and innocent as the sodden air
as you act Christ's stagger
trick the congregation
up the scale of tears
