The Tudor Restaurant
It would be up one flight of carpeted stairs, smelling of gravy,
in the High Street or Marketplace of some cathedral city.
The streets would be crowded and the sky stormy,
it would be a Wednesday or Thursday, sometime around nineteen-sixty.
There would be a comfortable fug of roasts and coffee.
The waitress would be in a black dress with a white pinny.
The knives and spoons and dishes would be silver and heavy,
the cauliflower in white sauce and the soup mulligatawny.
Outside, tops of buses and umbrellas would be shiny
and our seats by the laced windows would seem extra comfy.
You would have bought yourself stockings, in a bag from Bon Marché,
and I a new LP of Gieseking playing Debussy.
Thunder would rumble and we would watch the people scurry.
We would light cigarettes and love each other madly.
