PALANTIR 18, ed Jim Burns. 50p. 7 Ryelands Crescent Larches Estate, Preston Lancashire, England. Good as ever. Contains work by Roy Fisher, Peter Dent, Edwin Brock, Gad Turnbull, Wes Magee, Edwin Morgan. Jim Burns on Neurotica.
WAVES Vol. 10 Nos 1 & 2. Special Double Issue for the 10th anniversary. ed. Bernice Lever, C$3.00. 79 Denham Drive, Thornhill, Ontario, Canada L4J 1P2. Mostly Canadian, and this issue is a little too middle of the road for my taste. Has work by Irving Layton & Ralph Gustafsson, plus some readable prose. Perhaps too big an issue. The previous one hung together better. But for 3 Canadian dollars the investment isn’t at all bad.
PO&SIE 19., ed Michel Deguy. 50 Francs. Librairie Classique Eugène Bélin, 8 rue Ferou, 75278 PARIS CEDX 06, France. Fantastically expensive journal, but a very interesting one. Includes Robert Marteau’s translation of Shakespeare’s Phoenix and the Turtle, Jacques Roubaud’s translation of Edward Herbert, versions of Hölderlin, Rilke (the first Dumb Elegy), Fortini, Zanzotto. Poetry by Reda, Chrisment, Gavronsky. Plus, interestingly, passages of Robert Walser & Elias Canetti alternately, in translation. Subscriptions abroad are 200 French Francs, for one year (four issues).
TELEGRAM 2, ed. Ian Robinson & John Stahatos, 12 Stevenage Roads London SW6 6ES, England. 70p. An excellent issue, much improving upon the promise of the first issue. Contains excellent work by Tranströmer, Sinopoulos, Harter, Higginson, and (all new to me) Daphne Marlatt, Paul Edwards & D.E.Steward. Also a fine review of Ashbery’s As We Know by John Ash.
