Outer Space
Our neighbours’ curtains were closed for two months,
Their three-legged cat being let in and out
The only sign of life. Weirdos. Psychopaths?
Paul down the street, 12 year old UFO fanatic,
Reckoned it was to block out the sun
As they recreated the conditions of their home planet
On which, of course, all cats have three legs.
He has every X Files episode taped,
Books with those pictures of frisbeed saucepan lids,
Believes the Nazcan lines are landing strips,
That Stonehenge was an intergalactic Heathrow,
That some tomb paintings show space ships.
His mum says he’s a bad mixer
To explain his walks during school hours,
Dreamily distant as his Andromedan Nebula.
I saw him one afternoon, holding his coat open wide
As he leant into that day’s gale,
Going so far he stumbled forward,
Embracing gravity.
