The freezing fog thugs in from the river
through crust-brown streets,
past blinking bundles
wedged into subways and doors.
The noises it contains are hollow and jagged -
inside here, however, they’re incessant
as the coins and notes drop into the fountain.
And tier upon tier, the edifice rises
to a night-shaded roof, with its piped-in climate.
It’s so clear that the clientele are being filtered
and that the grubby ones are out there in the frost
but you can’t see how it happens, you’re one of the blessed
with your Atlantic face, I taunt myself,
facing the poster of the lingerie-clad temptress,
the hero's recreation when he does as he’s told.
Gone, the sullen realm
and the sad life of the Party...
except from the wrinkled aunt
who smuggles its Medusine head
in her crinkled carrier bag.
