The Music In The Garden
I leave the music playing in the house
as I move down to the rain-filled garden. Dark cello,
all dark brown wood, all echo – like the space
we make between walls and windows, arms and
eyes, like the strangeness of our connection
which sometimes seems as solid as this house,
sometimes as light as floatable as dust, the flap
of a curtain, water splashes on the bathroom mirror –
the music and then the silence after, which teases
at meanings of notes and string but leaves us no easy logic.
Yet down in the garden, among the spikes of rained-
on daisies, wilderness of mint and the fallen
pots of green tomato plants, I know it is playing
behind the black windows, the flowers in the jug
on the sill, the composure of stone. I bind up
broken stems, deadhead geraniums, pull snails off
the path, make order after rain, and I hear it
in my head, bending down I feel it, skin against my skin.
