Reclamation
This Chiswick street of London brick
is acid yellow, black and grey,
grimy, dull and cold. Winter
everywhere. But suddenly
a horizontal shaft of sunlight
half a mile wide homes in
through patchwork plane-trees, scoring
a direct hit on twenty-seven houses
simultaneously. And deep within
these walls a memory is stirred -
the half-forgotten comfort of the kiln,
the laying-on and letting go of rough,
creative hands, the slow bonding
of the mortar …
Everything is changed. I know
they will not last - this street, this sun -
but for the moment we are alive
and well, and re-connected.
