Glory
The swing of Bridget’s front gate
disturbs the marigold-head
of bright yellow spider eggs
suspended mid-frame.
A scirr of invisible
legs, and a dozen tiny
bodies quicken on the web’s
improbable spokes,
new-hatched to the idea
of gravity, or learning
the mob’s decoy centrifuge;
its precise panic.
In the annunciation
of this late-spring sunset’s breeze
we believe that these hundreds
of spiders might spin
their angel-sails and, with two
front legs delicate as faith,
leave go of their globe and lift
like pollen or ash.
With knowledge of birds tasting
like a penny on the tongue
we covet this letting go,
this unencumbrance.
