Sunday Morning, Early
A woman in overalls and jacket
strides downhill to a new shift
and
two joggers in black
beat up the pavement in tandem
whilst
an elderly woman walks
an equally elderly dog sniffing
the new morning with canine appreciation.
A cleaner at ‘The Cross’ polishing
door knobs and brass plates
waves
to a cluck of early churchgoers
nipping through Clegg’s Entry
past
the illuminated plate glass of McDonald’s
where a tired youngster sets up tables
behind potted plants and locked doors.
A lone carrier of bags ticking no boxes
but inviting speculation walks
steadily
down the length of the precinct
knitting together these figures
moving
in the quiet coolness
of the barely begun day.
Wheels are few and far between.
