Morpheus and His Brother Death
They are very close, Death and his kid brother.
On long car journeys they sit, chatting,
Morpheus beside me, Death in the back.
Morpheus sprawls, fat and languorous, sucking
at double cheese-burger and large Coke.
I stretch, adjust air-flow, turn up the radio.
Death sits bolt upright. Tense. Pin-striped
knee-bones jammed into my seat back. Tut-
tutting at poor lane discipline. Sharp
intakes of breath at blinding wagon-spray.
Life’s a waiting game, young Morph he yawns.
Ten Green Bottles again or One Man Went To Mow?
