The Week
From midday on the Bangkok weather’s much too hot for anything sensational in the way of work, but we have the five afternoons of the conference to produce, in workshop pairs, a teaching aid. I am chosen to partner a young woman in her early thirties, a bit younger than me. We enjoy working together, light of heart in the steamy atmosphere, have a few good laughs, and at the end of the week there’s something we can offer without shame for the ‘proceedings’.
A day later I read in the newspaper the police have arrested her, waiting until the conference was over so as not to embarrass the organisers. It says she knew all week what the police were going to do. Her husband had been unfaithful and on the eve of the conference she’d murdered him.
